I slide on the fabric sneakers
And feel their welcoming embrace.
Sometimes, they are the only welcoming embrace.
Their scuffs and scratches are familiar.
The laces are fraying,
Like my soul.
I like the way they rub the asphalt,
Rough and tender.
The gravelly song of a journey begun.
This is true, there's nothing like a well worn pair of comfortable sneakers..nice write..:)
ReplyDeleteThe laces are fraying...like my soul. There's a bit of sadness and a bit of comfort in this poem. Like life.
ReplyDeleteHi Louise
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this piece - put me in mind of my 10 year old converse all stars (chuck taylors)That old and worn they resemble flip flops!
Jokes aside - i feel my old boots have travelled with me - taking the Knocks - you capture this perfectly.
nice touch on the gravelly song...love it when i find a good pair of shoes...all the scratches carry a story...
ReplyDeleteSold! Unlike many ladies...I rely on old favorites and wear them out to the point there's no wear left! Some potent lines combine to make this a very enjoyable and thought provoking read! Will stay with me long after the comment's posted.

ReplyDeleteRough and tender.
Nothing like comfortable armour!
You can't beat an old pair of canvas sneakers to put a spring in your step and get a job done.
ReplyDeleteI love my fluffy house shoes after a day at work. nice poem.
ReplyDeleteThe laces are fraying/like my soul
ReplyDeleteSome very effective phrases here, and a warmth behind the stresses.
Love this ode to your sneakers :)
ReplyDeleteI love the last line! The whole poem is good but the ending clinches it for me.
ReplyDeleteI do hate new shoes. Really liked the title and how you mixed in some dark lines withe the matter-of-fact :)
ReplyDeleteWow, this is good. I love how the title plays off the poem (against expectation) -- the titular conversation is wordless, as with old familiar friends.
ReplyDeleteDavid
Thank you all, so much!
